In The Languages of Pao (1958), Vance puts the hypothesis that language creates perception (not vice versa) into a scifi environment. Among his best short works are Telek, (1952), ΓÇ£The Moon MothΓÇ¥ (1961; in which music is featured as a secondary form of communication) and the 1967 novella The Last Castle, which brought Vance his second Hugo and first Nebula awards. He also wrote mystery novels, winning an Edgar award for The Man in the Cage, and scripts for the television series Captain Video.
